How is treatment duration determined?

OneChoice provides an evidence-based duration for the diagnosis, specimen source, organisms, and regimen shown on the report. When more than one duration is supported, OneChoice generally favors the shortest effective course.

Is the displayed duration final?

No. Think of it as a starting point for the clinical scenario on the report. The right duration may change based on illness severity, clinical response, immune status, source control, new culture or imaging results, or whether the infection is complicated, recurrent, or deep-seated.

Conditions such as bacteremia, osteomyelitis, abscess, or infected hardware may need a different approach. In other situations, antimicrobial treatment may not be needed at all.

Why might the duration be undefined?

Sometimes the literature does not establish a reliable duration for a particular drug, organism, and indication. OneChoice will show an undefined duration rather than imply certainty that the evidence does not support. See Why would a report show an undefined dose or duration?
