What if resistance is detected by one testing modality but not the other?

Modified on Mon, Oct 23, 2023 at 9:37 AM

Cultures and molecular diagnostics provide similar information, such as resistance information. However, the technology behind each method is different. In many cases, a resistant gene may be detected although sensitivities may not show correlating resistance. The opposite may occur as well, where sensitivities may show drug resistance, but no genes were detected via PCR. There are many reasons for this as well. In any case, resistance detected by either method should be taken into consideration, even if the results are not consistent between the different modalities of treatment.
